The EUSS (European Union Settlement Scheme) replaced the EEA (European Economic Area) Family Permits on 30th June 2021.

The EUSS family permit is similar to entry clearance. An EU Settlement Scheme family permit makes it easier to travel with your family member to the UK or to join them there. It lets you come to the UK for up to 6 months. You can work and study, and come and go as many times as you want before the permit expires. Without one, you might not get a boarding pass or may be refused entry into the UK. You can apply to stay longer in the UK if you’re eligible for the EU Settlement Scheme.

ELIGIBILITY

You may be entitled to an EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) family permit to come to the UK if the following conditions are proved:

  • You are the family member of someone from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein
  • You are the family member of an eligible person of Northern Ireland
  • You are applying from outside the UK.

The EUSS family permit facilitates applications from your family members to come and live in the UK if you are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen living in the UK. Your family member(s) can apply for pre-settled or settled status from the EUSS if:

  • you have pre-settled or settled status
  • your relationship with your family member started by 31 December 2020 – unless you’re a Swiss Citizen

If your family member is a child who was born after 31 December 2020, you can also apply for them to come and live in the UK. If you came to the UK on a visa after 31 December 2020, you cannot use the EU Settlement Scheme to bring your family to the UK. You will need to check if your visa allows you to bring your family to the UK.
